I'll keep my comments brief.
ReplyDeleteI've driven 1200 miles thus far with this unit. It accurately directs me to my desired location 40% of the time. Other times, it's taken me to a regular gas station which it listed as a truck stop. Another truck stop was a funeral home in a very busy business district.
The unit directed me to a ferry which had a capacity of 8 tons. My rig weighs 18 tons and this info had been entered in the GPS unit.
I often get a warning telling me that my current route may not be suitable for my RV. I purchased this unit to keep me on routes suitable for my RV.
Finally, the unit does not take an RVs propane capacity into consideration. I can legally pass through some tunnels and not others. In Montreal, we are below the dangerous good threshold. In Baltimore, we were above their threshold. The unit will gleefully send me through tunnels that I can not legally pass through.
Based on all these factors, I give this unti a fail.
I truly appreciate your review. The GPS unit sounded perfect in the commercial (doesn't everything ?) so it's good to know how its real-world performance is so vastly different.
ReplyDeletei also have the same Garmin. i find it will always take me the slowest , longest lest best way. on two trips i was directed to drive 120 miles, 60 miles out of my way, 70 miles, 30 miles out of the way. i put in avoid highways it but me on I-75, i said shortest,70 is not smaller than 30, i said fuel officiant 70 miles uses more than 30. i called there Garmin no help desk. They said to change my vehicle to a car so it would take me on the shorter better route. the shorter route that garmin said was not for rvs was a federal hyway used by truckers to by pass Atlanta on the east side. after 30 minutes of putting way points I was able to force the garmin to use the shorter routes. i had a similar problem yesterday in Atlanta, it tried to route me 4 miles out of my way. Garmin has other problems also, like changing to street names in cities instead of using the high way numbers, can be very confusing.
